The BYU Electron Microscopy Facility has a new Krios G4 cryo-transmission electron microscope (TEM). This microscope is capable of atomic resolution imaging of biological molecules, and is equipped with software packages which allow the 3-D reconstruction of proteins and other nano-structures. This is done with either the Single Particle Analysis (SPA) or the Tomography (Tomo) software. Each of these software packages will control the microscope for automated image capture that can then be used with other software packages to analyze and reconstruct the images to produce the 3-D models of the proteins/structures being analyzed. This puts BYU as a leader in the field of Cryo-TEM.
