Publication Policies

Guidelines for acknowledging the facility in publications and notifying us of those publications.

Activities that are supported by the proceeds from the Simmons Research Endowment, such as BYU's Electron Microscopy Facility, should include an acknowledgement to the endowment, which is managed by BYU. Acknowledgement should appear in research publications, research presentations, invention disclosures, news releases, and other results funded by the award.
Furthermore, we request that our users report their work and publications supported by the facility using the Publication Notification Form.

Acknowledgement Statement for Projects Supported by BYU's Electron Microscopy Facility

"We acknowledge the BYU Electron Microscopy Facility for providing access to the equipment and expertise that allowed this project to be performed. This work has also been made possible, in part, by a grant from the Simmons Research Endowment at Brigham Young University."
The acknowledgement wording is flexible to allow consistency with disciplinary norms.

Why Is This Important?

Acknowledging research sponsors is important for at least these reasons:

  • Expresses gratitude for support
  • Fulfills contractual requirements of many funding agencies
  • Conforms to research publication norms that allow reviewers, publishers, and readers to evaluate potential biases due to the source of funding,
  • Allows us to quantify the utility of the EM facility to our campus and to continue providing the equipment and services necessary for your research
The Electron Microscopy Facility is subsidized by BYU and by:

  • The Simmons Research Endowment
  • The College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences
  • The Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering
  • The College of Life Sciences
